6 killed after train hits van in Indonesia

The accident happened when the van driver drove through a railway crossing.

JAKARTA:
Six people were killed and two others were injured when a train struck a van in Jombang, East Java on Saturday night.

Jombang police in a statement said the six victims, who were passengers of the van, died at the scene.

The other two who were also passengers, were rushed to the local hospital in critical condition.

The accident happened around 11.15pm local time when the van drove through a railway crossing without barriers in Jabon village between Jombang-Sembung station.

Initial investigation showed that the van driver ignored other road users’ warnings, who had repeatedly asked the driver to stop.

The train, operated by PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia, then hit and dragged the car for about 100m from the scene.

No train passengers were injured in the accident, and services resumed at 11.25pm.
