BENGALURU:
US president Donald Trump declared a state of emergency in Louisiana ahead of tropical storm Barry, the White House said in a statement late on Thursday.

The declaration frees up money and federal resources that the state can use in coping with the storm and its aftermath.

While Donald Trump issues a storm warning, the NHC similarly issues one for the Louisiana coast from Intracoastal City to Grand Isle.

Barry, the second named storm of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season, is located about 145km south of the mouth of Mississippi River with maximum sustained winds of 65km per hour, the Miami-based weather forecaster said.

“Centre of Barry will be near or over the central or southeastern coast of Louisiana Friday night or Saturday, and then move inland into the lower Mississippi Valley on Sunday,” the NHC said.
