LONDON:
British Prime Minister Theresa May will award up to a million teachers, police, junior soldiers, prison officers, and National Health Service workers a pay rise of between 1.5% and 3.5%, according to a person familiar with the plans.

Most workers will see a rise of around 2% for 2018-19 in a settlement worth 4.2 billion pounds (RM22.4 billion) in the largest rise for public-sector workers since a pay freeze in 2010, when the government made reducing the budget deficit its main priority. The settlements come from savings made in other areas of government spending.

The lowest-paid in the health service can expect a rise of up to 11% by 2021, as May’s Conservatives aim to see off the electoral threat from the opposition Labour Party led by socialist Jeremy Corbyn, who has pledged to increase government spending overall.

Hospital caterers, porters, administrators, and other staff can expect their full-time salary to reach 18,000 pounds (RM96,000) per year, according to the person.
