60 Thai policemen probed over ang pow from an alleged gambling operator

Incident comes a week after the deputy national police chief barred cops from accepting ang pow from Chinese businessmen.

BANGKOK: Thai Police are investigating 60 policemen from four police stations for receiving ang pow from an alleged gambling operator.

Metropolitan Police Division 7 commander Maj Gen Boonyarit Rodma ordered the probe after a video clip of the policemen queuing to receive the ang pow from the alleged operator went viral.

According to the local media here today, the video clip was viewed over 159,000 times and shared over 2,200 times in just 15 hours since it was posted on Facebook last Friday.

Boonyarit said the policemen came from Taling Chan, Thamma Sala, Bang Yikhan and Bang Saothong police stations. He also ordered for the chiefs in the respective police stations to be questioned over the incident.

The four police stations were ordered to file a report to the Metropolitan Police Bureau within a week, he said.

The incident happened just a week after the deputy national police chief Gen Chalermkiat Sriworakhan issued an instruction to all police chiefs to ensure their subordinates do not accept ang pow from Chinese businessmen.

He warned that disciplinary action would be taken if they disobeyed the instruction.
