PETALING JAYA:
It is well established that pets bring much joy to humans, despite the occasional mischief they get into. Be it a companion on lonely nights or a buddy for tranquil evening strolls, furkids have a way of making their human parents’ lives more meaningful.

Unfortunately, Malaysia has a large stray population, mostly owing to irresponsible owners who abandon unwanted litters and older animals. As such, those who are thinking of getting pets are highly encouraged to adopt instead of shop.

With this in mind, Voice for Paws and Pads & Paws KL are organising an adoption drive and fundraising campaign called “Pick a Paw” this Sunday at Jama KL, a pet-friendly restaurant in Mont Kiara.

Both rescue groups are run by passionate volunteers who save, rehabilitate, neuter and rehome strays. As they do not have shelters, the animals live with foster families until they can find forever homes.

In addition to the adorable kitties and doggies that await you, a host of vendors will offer toys and accessories for your pets. Among them are Taming Wild, Furbulous, The Pet Grocer, and Peekaboo.Paws.

Those who are so inclined may also contribute towards the groups’ increasing vet bills. Voice for Paws president Brevina Balasundran told FMT that her team has recently rescued several strays, some of which have been involved in hit-and-run accidents.

“Thus, we’re also hoping to raise some funds through our event,” she said.

Up for adoption this weekend are a three-and-a-half-month-old male pup, a handsome three-year-old male dog named Bobo, and five kittens between the ages of two and four months.

“We hope all our animals will find homes, and we are grateful for any small donations to our work,” said Pads & Paws KL founder Sofie Ford.

Meanwhile, the team at Jama KL is extremely supportive of animal NGOs and are “thrilled to be able to host our furry friends”, according to events head Natalia De Ponte.

Added Brevina: “Most of all, we just want to enjoy the day with our cats and dogs, and we hope people will come and support us.”
