PETALING JAYA:
Make this Mother’s Day extra special by becoming a “mommy” for abandoned and stray cats and dogs looking for a forever home.

Animal rescue organisation Rufflove is back with its ninth pet adoption drive, this time with 20 adorable cats and dogs looking for a loving home. All the animals have been vaccinated and dewormed.

Catching up with Rufflove recently, founder Gabrielle Geetha told FMT that the idea to form the animal rescue organisation came about after a particularly sad but brief encounter she had with a sick stray cat behind her house.

She said the cat was clearly in pain and struggling to breathe. Refusing to let the cat suffer needlessly, she rushed it to the vet hoping that with the right medical care, the cat could survive. However, despite her efforts, the cat was too sick and died.

“After that I realised that I had to do something to help these helpless souls as there are so many dogs and cats dying on the street,” she said, adding that Rufflove was officially formed in August last year.

The Rufflove team is made up of four members who take in strays and abandoned animals, and foster them until they are healthy enough to be adopted.

“We are rather new and have not been able to set up a shelter yet, so we have been caring for these animals in our own homes. Because of this, each of us has more than four animals in our house at any one time,” Gabrielle said with a laugh.

Rufflove has so far organised eight pet adoption drives and have been able to find fur-ever homes for over 20 animals.

“Our first adoption drive did not go so well but since then we have been able to reach out to more people and find a home for these animals,” Gabrielle shared.

She said the organisation also receives many calls about animals that have been dumped in dustbins and drains. “We do our best to go rescue these animals.”

Because the organisation’s mission is to find good homes for the animals they rescue and foster, they make sure that every potential adopter is vetted.

“The most important thing is to ensure that those adopting live in an area where they are allowed to keep pets because we do not want these animals to end up back on the streets.”

Once an animal is adopted, team members make it a point to visit the animal’s home to ensure that both the pet and the adopter are doing well.

“We check up on the animals and the adopters after two weeks – especially those adopting for the first time – just to check in and ensure that the animals are settling in well,” Gabrielle shared.

For this year’s special Mother’s Day pet adoption drive, Rufflove is collaborating with three companies to give away animal treats to adopters as a simple ‘thank you’ for opening their hearts and homes to a little furry one.

“Each person that adopts a pet this Sunday will take home a starter pack of homemade treats and meals from Woofsome Meals.

“And we are also collaborating with Barked Clubhouse who will be giving away one free pet taxi or pet sitting service for each person who adopts a pet,” Gabrielle shared.

Not to worry there are also treats for the humans as well. Rufflove is collaborating with Edesia.my who will be selling their mouth-watering artisanal spreads as well.

So why not make this Mother’s Day extra special – for you and a furry one – by adopting one of the cats or dogs at Rufflove’s pet adoption drive! Come on over… these furry ones are excited to meet you.
