Teo arrived in New Delhi via Bangkok on a Thai Airways flight but was denied entry by Indian immigration authorities.

He was placed on a flight back to the Thai capital, according to an official from the Badminton Association of India (BAI).

“The player travelled on a visa that had expired on Jan 7. He has gone back to Bangkok and may apply for a fresh visa,” BAI general-secretary Sanjay Mishra told Bernama.

However, in an Instagram post the 30-year-old shuttler said he will have to pull out of the Jan 16 to 21 championship.

Teo said he “made a mistake” by using his old passport in the visa application online.

A Malaysia High Commission official went to the airport to see if the player needed any help.

“(It) was my mistake and I have to withdraw from India Open,” Ee Yi said on social media.

Coach Rosman Razak and Teo’s doubles partner Ong Yew Sin are already in New Delhi.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi are ranked No 12 in the world.

Other Malaysian players scheduled to play in the Indian event are Man Wei Chong, Tee Kai Wun, Aaron Chia, Soh Wooi Yik, Ng Tze Yong, Lee Zii Jia, Goh Jin Wei, Vivian Hoo, Lim Chiew Sien, Pearly Tan and M Thinaah.
