AHMEDABAD:
Australia skipper Steve Smith won the toss and elected to bat today in the fourth and final Test against India at the world’s biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.

Stand-in captain Smith named an unchanged team from the side that won the third Test in Indore. India lead the series 2-1.

India captain Rohit Sharma said he would have batted first had he won the toss and said it is “not a surface which we saw in the first three Tests”.

The pitches in the first three Tests have been rank turners with the highest total being 400 by India in the opener.

The hosts made one change from Indore with Mohammed Shami coming in for fellow pace bowler Mohammed Siraj, who is rested.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese were in attendance at the 132,000-capacity stadium named after the Indian premier.

A bumper crowd was expected.

The hosts need a win to clinch the series and secure their berth in the World Test Championship final, scheduled at The Oval in London in June.
