When a scuffle broke out between two spectators in the away end early in the second half, police moved in to quell the disturbance, only for the fighting to escalate.
Olympiacos criticised the police’s use of tear gas to put a stop to the trouble, which leading to the match – won 2-0 by Olympiacos – being put on hold until the chemicals cleared from the air.
“Police moved unexpectedly into the section and threw tear gas where some 2,000 fans including children with their parents were seated, just because two people were arguing,” said Olympiacos’ director of communications Konstantinos Karapapas.
Media reports said one fan was taken to the hospital with a minor injury and no arrests were reported.
Olympiakos could face a three-point deduction in the Superleague Greece and be forced to play up to four home matches behind closed doors following the incident.
