PETALING JAYA:
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook has called on the police to expedite their investigation into a five-vehicle crash that killed five people and injured eight in Kluang, Johor, yesterday.

Extending his condolences to the victims’ families, Loke said he hoped the investigation paper could be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers as soon as possible.

“This is a tragedy that should never have happened. Appropriate legal action must be taken against the driver responsible for causing this accident,” said Loke in a statement.

“A driving licence does not allow someone to drive recklessly or carelessly in a manner that claims innocent lives.”

Kosmo reported Kluang police chief Bahrin Noh as saying that a 19-year-old teenager was believed to have been racing with his 22-year-old brother prior to the crash, which also claimed the latter’s life.

Police have remanded the teenager to assist in the investigation into the crash, which saw four members of the same family lose their lives.

The case is being investigated under Sections 42(1) and 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which cover reckless and dangerous driving and death caused as a result of such driving.
