PETALING JAYA:
A coalition of 300 NGOs will protest in solidarity with the state’s royal institution in front of the Selangor state secretariat building in Shah Alam on Saturday, days after Selangor PAS Youth announced a similar rally set to take place the same day.

Gerakan Pembela Ummah chairman Zai Mustafa said this followed the controversy over Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s call for a complete end to pig farming in the state.

He also demanded that leaders of Pakatan Harapan, especially from DAP, publicly apologise to Sultan Sharafuddin.

“It is arrogant to look for ways (to circumvent the sultan’s call) with excuses such as ‘new areas’ and ‘high technology’,” he said at a press conference today.

On Monday, Selangor PAS Youth said it would hold its rally at the same venue in Shah Alam, with wing chief Sukri Omar saying it was being held because several DAP leaders allegedly disrespected the sovereignty of the state’s royal institution.

The controversy over pig farming in the state reignited when DAP’s Seri Kembangan assemblyman, Wong Siew Ki, proposed during a debate on the Selangor sultan’s address to allow modern, closed-system pig farming in the state.

The proposal triggered a motion by the opposition to refer her to the rights and privileges committee.

Sukri also called for Wong to be suspended for up to 12 months if her proposal was found to have contradicted a royal decree.

Wong, however, defended her proposal as being based on feedback from residents in her constituency, and said she was prepared to face any action.
