
Salleh said that in view of the “first-past-the-post” system the country adopts, cooperation with other parties is a political reality.
“Umno must work with partners who share common goals to avoid vote-splitting and maximise winning chances,” he said in a Facebook post to mark the party’s 80th anniversary on May 11.
In Sabah’s case, he said, Umno should work with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, which is a “clear and strategic choice”.
He said Umno and GRS are now seen to be on the same page when it comes to state-related issues.
The former Sabah chief minister also said that voter assessment is now more critical and issue-based, adding that the focus is on transparency, integrity, economic management, and cost of living.
“Umno can continue to endure. However, success depends on the right strategy and smart cooperation.
“And decisions should be based on data, strengths, and advantages – not driven by emotion or sentiment,” he said.
