Muhyiddin said Azmin was nominated because he is currently the opposition leader in the state assembly. “He was a PN leader, so he should continue serving as one,” Muhyiddin told reporters after attending the Selangor Bersatu convention here today.
Azmin, who was Selangor menteri besar from 2014 to 2018, resigned as Selangor PN chief on Jan 1, following Muhyiddin’s decision to step down as coalition chairman.
Muhyiddin said he had submitted a list of candidates to be PN state chiefs in Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, and Sabah to coalition chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar. However, he did not reveal the identities of the other candidates.
On a separate matter, Muhyiddin said he was confident the opposition coalition could wrest control of Selangor in the next general election.
“We just need seven more seats to win,” he said. PN currently holds 22 of the 56 seats in the Selangor state assembly through Bersatu (12) and PAS (10).
Last year, Azmin claimed that PN is capable of winning 10 more seats in the next state election.
Asked about PAS’s intention to contest 15 state seats in the next Melaka polls, Muhyiddin said: “We will discuss it. Bersatu can also state the number of seats it wants to contest.”
