Its minister, Fadhlina Sidek, said the state education department is organising assistance for the family of the deceased victim, Nur Fatimatul Hawa Azaudin.
“I extend my condolences to her family on behalf of the ministry. May they be granted strength and resilience in facing this difficult time,” she said in a Facebook post.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also extended his condolences to Fatimatul’s family, and thoughts and prayers to the injured student.
“This tragedy should serve as a lesson and reminder to all to exercise caution in everything they do,” he said in a post on X tonight.
Earlier, Kota Bharu police chief Azmir Damiri said the student died after being hit by a car in front of the girls’ surau at the school.
He said the accident occurred when the driver mistakenly stepped on the accelerator, causing the car to ram into Fatimatul and another student.
Fatimatul died at the scene from severe head injuries. The other student suffered severe injuries and is being treated at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital. The driver was unhurt.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
