GEORGE TOWN:
Penang executive councillor Fahmi Zainol has been charged in the Balik Pulau magistrates’ court with domestic abuse.

Fahmi, who is PKR’s Pantai Jerejak assemblyman, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Chia Huey Ting.

Fahmi, 35, is accused of voluntarily causing hurt to his wife, Nur Hidayah Abd Jabar, also 35, at their home in Persiaran Pantai Jerejak 11, Bayan Lepas, at about 10pm on Feb 22.

The charge was framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, read with Section 326A of the same code for causing hurt to a spouse.

The offence is punishable by up two years in prison, a maximum RM2,000 fine, or both, upon conviction.

The prosecution requested that bail be set at RM5,000 but Fahmi’s lawyer, Shamsher Singh Thind, sought a lower amount, saying his client had cooperated with the police.

Chia granted bail of RM2,000 with one surety and fixed April 28 for case mention and document submission.

Deputy public prosecutors Nazran Sham, Ikmal Affandi Zulkifli and Lim Jin Hong represented the prosecution.
