Number of flood evacuees surges past 18,000

Nearly 3,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes in Selangor, but Kelantan remains the worst-hit state with 9,962 evacuated.

PETALING JAYA:
The number of evacuees surged to 18,470 this morning as the flood situation in West Malaysia worsened through the night.

Kelantan remained the worst-hit state with 9,962 victims at 40 relief centres in Kota Bharu, Tumpat, Bachok and Pasir Puteh. The situation has also worsened in Selangor where 2,696 victims have fled their homes.

They are taking shelter at 19 evacuation centres in Kuala Selangor, Klang, Shah Alam, Hulu Langat and Sabak Bernam, according to the welfare department’s InfoBencana portal.

There are also 2,617 flood victims in Perak, 1,651 in Kedah, 1,091 in Perlis, 337 in Penang, 92 in Terengganu and 22 in Pahang.

In Brickfields, meanwhile, two people were relocated to a shelter due to a landslide caused by heavy rain yesterday.
