KUALA LUMPUR:
Nearly 9,000 people have been evacuated as monsoon floods spread across the northern peninsular states, with Penang and Perak the latest to be affected.

The number of victims at relief centres in Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis continued to rise tonight, but some victims in Terengganu returned home as conditions gradually improved.

In Penang, 128 victims from 30 families in Tasek Gelugor were placed at two centres this afternoon after heavy rain caused the Sungai Jadak to overflow, inundating Kampung Desa Puri and Kampung Simpang Tiga.

Two centres were opened in Perak tonight (Batang Padang and Perak Tengah) but the number of flood victims has yet to be determined.

In Kelantan, the number of flood victims surged to 7,830 tonight, housed in 31 centres across Kota Bharu, Tumpat, Bachok and Pasir Puteh.

The number of flood victims in Kedah rose to 404 at 8pm in Kulim, while 114 people were at relief centres in Perlis.

However, the number of victims in Terengganu dropped from 531 to 359 at 8pm in Besut.
