PETALING JAYA:
Jalan Kenari in Sungai Ara, Bayan Lepas, will stay closed until Nov 10 after part of the road caved in earlier this week, said Penang executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari.

He said the closure, from the Jalan Dato’ Ismail Hashim junction, was necessary to ensure public safety.

“Motorists can use alternative routes via Jalan Sungai Ara 1, Persiaran Relau, or Jalan Kedidi,” he said in a statement today.

“The authorities are targeting to reopen Jalan Kenari on Nov 10, but public safety remains the top priority and the date is subject to change depending on site conditions.”

Zairil said the Penang public works department received a complaint from the public on Nov 4 about the cave-in along Jalan Kenari, opposite SMK Sungai Ara.

“Excavation work at the site found an underground water flow believed to be the cause of the road depression.

“Public works department has asked the Penang Water Supply Corporation and Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) to investigate,” he said.

He said excavation works are still ongoing to pinpoint the source of the leak, and that IWK will carry out pipe reinforcement under supervision.

No casualties were reported.
