KUALA LUMPUR:
Roblox has given its assurance that it will enhance safety measures on its platform through the use of artificial intelligence and human monitoring, according to youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh.

Yeoh said Roblox has also expressed its readiness to work with the government, particularly in data sharing and compliance with national regulations.

She said she had raised concerns with Roblox over the safety of children using the popular online gaming platform.

“We want a digital world that is not only fun, but also helps build character and instils positive values in the next generation,” she said in a Facebook post, which included photos of her meeting with Roblox representatives.

She noted that platforms like Roblox now have more than 100 million users worldwide, including over one million in Malaysia.

“With such a vast user base, the responsibility to protect young users cannot be taken lightly.

“As youth and sports minister – and as a mother – I am deeply concerned about how some online games can influence children’s behaviour and emotions,” she said.

Last Saturday, a six-year-old boy was seriously injured after being slashed by his nine-year-old brother with a sharp object in Kampung Parit Nipah, Parit Raja, Batu Pahat.

Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said preliminary investigations revealed that the older brother may have attacked his sibling after his Roblox game was interrupted, causing him to lose all his accumulated points.

Last week, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said his ministry is assessing the need to license at least 10 online games, including Roblox, which he said is unsuitable for children under the age of 16.

Women, family and community development minister Nancy Shukri had also said that the government was considering a possible ban on Roblox and UMI amid growing concerns over safety issues.
