PETALING JAYA:
The broadcasting department under the communications ministry has apologised after an RTM commentator stated the wrong name for the Indonesian president during the live coverage of the 47th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

In a statement, the department said an internal investigation found that the commentator had erroneously referred to the president as Joko Widodo instead of the current president, Prabowo Subianto.

“RTM extends its sincere apologies to the president and government of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as to all parties affected by this mistake.

“RTM views this matter seriously, and appropriate action has been taken,” it said in a statement.

The department said RTM will continue to strengthen its editorial controls and fact-checking processes to ensure that all broadcast information is accurate and delivered with integrity.

A recording of the live telecast showed Prabowo arriving at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre earlier today for the summit, where he was welcomed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The 47th Asean Summit is taking place from today until Oct 28, with leaders from across the region, as well as US president Donald Trump, convening in Kuala Lumpur.
