GEORGE TOWN:
The main road that connects Balik Pulau and Relau on Penang island has been closed for 48 hours after seven landslides occurred following heavy rain yesterday, the state government said.

State infrastructure, transport, and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said Jalan Tun Sardon will be closed until 6pm on Saturday.

He said the heavy rain and strong winds also uprooted trees and sent boulders crashing down.

Zairil said the public works department had detected soil movements along the route, which were attributed to water flow caused by rainfall.

He also said the reopening of the road would depend on the  weather.

“We hope there is no storm again or it might get worse,” he told reporters at the scene today.

The worst of the seven landslides took place near the Anjung Indah lookout point along Jalan Tun Sardon at about 5pm.

The fire and rescue department said its team found that soil, boulders and collapsed trees had covered an area the size of a small classroom.

A video of the landslide showed a car narrowly missing the falling trees and earth. No vehicles were trapped or casualties reported.

Zairil said there had been some minor landslips, as well as incidents of falling trees and boulders, around Penang island since Oct 21.

These were at Pearl Hill 3 (Tanjung Tokong), Miami Green 1 (Batu Ferringhi), Puncak Bukit Mutiara, the Air Itam dam, Jalan Paya Terubong, Jalan Teluk Bahang, the Dua Residensi apartments in Teluk Kumbar, and Bukit Belah.

He advised road users to be extra careful and plan their journey ahead during periods of heavy rainfall.
