GEORGE TOWN:
A major landslide hit the Anjung Indah lookout point along Jalan Tun Sardon in Balik Pulau, here, this evening, forcing authorities to close the hill road to traffic.

In the 4.56pm incident, the fire and rescue department said firemen found soil, boulders and collapsed trees covering an area the size of a small classroom following incessant rain.

A video of the landslide showed a car narrowly missing the falling trees and earth.

No vehicles were trapped and no casualties were reported.

Faiz Helmi, who led the fire department operations, said his crew cleared fallen trees and ensured the site was safe before handing it over to the public works department and police for further action.

In a statement, he said the situation was under control by 5.50pm, but the road remains closed as a safety measure.

State infrastructure, transport, and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari described the incident as a slope failure and urged motorists to avoid using Jalan Tun Sardon for the time being.
