PETALING JAYA:
A Malaysian was arrested by Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Sept 30 for attempting to smuggle duty-unpaid cigarettes into the republic using a Malaysia-registered motorcycle.

In a video posted on Facebook, the ICA said the individual was stopped at the Woodlands checkpoint for enhanced inspection after being flagged by its Integrated Targeting Centre.

Officers found more than 400 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes concealed in black plastic bags on the side fairings of the motorcycle.

According to The Straits Times, the ICA uses data analytics to evaluate travellers, conveyances, and cargo before their arrival in Singapore, thus enabling the identification of high-risk individuals for enhanced inspection.

The case has been referred to Singapore customs for further investigation.
