KUALA LUMPUR:
The road transport department (JPJ) is developing an online system known as “ebaki” to sell expired vehicle registration numbers.

According to the Auditor-General’s Report on the government’s financial statements for 2024, the system will be developed under JPJ’s digital system development project.

“It is expected to go live in October 2026,” said the report, tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today.

According to the report, the revenue collected by JPJ through the sale of vehicle registration numbers from 2022 to 2024 totalled RM1.648 billion.

An estimated additional revenue of at least RM115.96 million could be collected if blocked and inactive registration numbers are offered at a minimum price.

The report said that as of 2024, there were 375,792 expired registration numbers unsold and 134 blocked car plates being offered at a minimum price.

The minimum price for registration numbers is set between RM300 and RM20,000 based on the “current, popular, interesting and premium categories”, with a service fee of RM10.
