Man drowned after falling off Batang Ai dam

The 31-year-old had apparently gone to the edge of the dam to ease himself when he slipped and fell.

PETALING JAYA:
A man drowned after falling off the side of the Batang Ai hydroelectric dam at Lubok Antu in Sri Aman, Sarawak, today.

A state fire and rescue department spokesman said the victim has been identified as Budak Tom, 31.

The spokesman said based on information from the victim’s wife, he had gone to the edge of the dam to urinate.

“However, he suddenly slipped and fell into the water.

“He managed to shout for help before he disappeared into the current,” Berita TV3 reported the spokesman as saying.

The spokesman said six water rescue personnel from the Betong station arrived at 5.30pm to start the search.

In a Facebook post, the Lubok Antu civil defence force said the victim’s body was found at about 7pm and sent to Sri Aman Hospital.
