KUALA LUMPUR:
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan claims the country could fall under some kind of “DAP control” if the Urban Renewal Bill is passed in the Dewan Rakyat.

Speaking at a rally objecting to the bill here today, Takiyuddin called DAP the “Developers’ Action Party”, and blamed it for the URA (Urban Renewal Act), which he dubbed the “Urban Robbery Act”.

He singled out housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming, who is from DAP, for his alleged “considerable authority” over land acquisition and urban redevelopment projects.

“That is what we need to understand,” the Kota Bharu MP said at a combined rally to oppose the Urban Renewal Bill and to show solidarity for a Gaza aid flotilla intercepted by Israeli defence forces.

Under the proposed legislation, the housing and local government minister will chair the federal executive committee tasked with overseeing urban redevelopment nationwide.

While some official clarifications said the minister’s role is advisory and that the states will retain authority, the bill’s provisions, particularly Sections 5, 13, and 20, outline powers including approving project implementation, declaring renewal areas, and selecting developers.

Earlier today, Nga said the ministry maintains an “open heart, open mind and open door” policy and is willing to consider all reasonable and constructive feedback on the bill.

The bill had faced stiff resistance in the Dewan Rakyat in August, with Barisan Nasional and seven PKR MPs joining the opposition in blocking its passage.

Debate on the bill is due to resume when the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes on Monday.
