PETALING JAYA:
Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has joined growing calls opposing the planned redevelopment of Wisma Damansara in Kuala Lumpur into two 60-storey towers, urging City Hall (DBKL) to comply with the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040.

Yeoh said the proposed redevelopment does not comply with the city’s local plan, which is a legally binding document.

In a statement, she noted that repeated departures from the plan not only undermine the integrity of town planning processes, but also erode public trust.

Yeoh, who is the youth and sports minister, pointed out that the project would cause severe traffic congestion in the area as the road network could not absorb any more high-density developments.

Even with several nearby projects still under construction, traffic in and out of Pusat Bandar Damansara is already at a standstill during peak hours, she said.

She said the project risks straining the existing infrastructure as residents continue to experience frequent water supply disruptions and service outages.

“Infrastructure must be upgraded before any further development is considered, not after. Approving new projects without resolving existing infrastructure challenges is simply irresponsible,” she said.

Yeoh said while the city mayor has discretionary powers to consider redevelopment incentives, redevelopment alone is not a sufficient basis for approving high-density proposals like the project in question, which carries a plot ratio of 1:9:6.

“Planning decisions must be based on a full evaluation of the area’s character, infrastructure readiness, and long-term sustainability,” she said.

She outlined three demands, where she urged DBKL not to approve any development projects if they do not strictly conform to the gazetted Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040, and not to propose new highways.

She also called for City Hall to ensure that residents’ associations are involved in the preparation of the impact assessments for the project.

Yeoh said she submitted formal objections together with the residents of Bukit Damansara to DBKL on Aug 15, and has sent a follow-up letter to mayor Maimunah Sharif.

It was reported that 300 households in Bukit Damansara have submitted official letters of objection against the project.

They said they are concerned that high-density projects will lead to severe, long-term traffic congestion on major arteries, such as Jalan Semantan and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim.

They also pointed out that the project’s plot ratio exceeds the 1:6 limit stipulated in the local plan for the area.

Yesterday, former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who also resides in the area, said he will be leading a community protest to ’’save” Bukit Damansara from the proposed project.
