KUALA LUMPUR:
A mechanic pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to a charge of gang robbery against a Chinese national, involving losses exceeding RM2.1 million, three months ago.

Syed Ali Imran Alqudri Syed Zulkefeli @ Syed Zulalqudri, 42, was charged with jointly committing the offence with two individuals who have already been charged, and another still at large.

Syed Ali is alleged to have robbed Chen Kexue, 31, of a branded watch valued at RM1.2 million, three gold bars weighing 300g, RM100,000 in cash and five mobile phones, totalling an estimated RM2,146,000, at a villa in Bukit Damansara here at about 10.10pm on July 21.

He was charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and caning, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Wafa Zainal Abidin opposed bail, citing the non-bailable nature of the offence. However, should the court see fit to grant bail, she requested that it be set at RM100,000 with one surety, given the substantial value of the stolen property.

Syed Ali’s counsel, Bazlinda Bahrin, asked for a lower bail amount, citing her client’s medical conditions of diabetes and spinal issues.

“My client, who has no fixed income, supports his wife and 14-year-old child. He also has no criminal record,” Bazlinda said.

Judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin granted bail at RM15,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to surrender his passport pending the disposal of the case.

She also set Nov 4 for the next mention of the case.

On Aug 8, two other individuals, Syaqir Ami, 30, and Nur Mahsar Nor, 34, had pleaded not guilty to similar charges in the same court.

They were granted bail at RM15,000 each with the additional requirements of reporting to a police station monthly and surrendering their passports.
