PETALING JAYA:
The Islamic development department (Jakim) has launched guidelines for arrests of shariah offenders across state boundaries.

Jakim director-general Sirajuddin Suhaimee said this will ensure offenders do not escape legal action.

He said the guidelines will empower shariah enforcement operations in every state.

“For example, if an offence is committed in state A and the offender escapes to state B, enforcement personnel in state A can arrest the offender in state B,” Berita Harian reported him as saying at a national convention for religious enforcement officials and shariah lawyers in Seremban today.

Sirajuddin said the comprehensive guidelines address several issues that had arisen previously.

He said the convention, attended by 150 enforcement officials and shariah lawyers, was organised to improve implementation of shariah law.
