Anwar said the initiative delivers on a key pledge by PKR and Pakatan Harapan, while ensuring that the public benefit directly from reforms in the country’s administration, Bernama reported.
He said the move to provide 300 litres of RON95 petrol per month at RM1.99 per litre for all Malaysians aged 16 and above with valid driving licences is the result of improved governance and sound financial management.
“Reducing petrol prices has been our promise for a long time. But it took time to realise because of the country’s huge debts, widespread corruption, leakages, and massive financial losses.
“That is why together with my colleagues in the Cabinet and other leaders, we decided to clear the mess.
“Malaysia can truly be a wealthy nation, but only if we have integrity and honesty. Without that, we will never prosper,” the PKR president said during a party gathering in Sandakan, Sabah, today in conjunction with the 27th anniversary of the reformasi movement.
Also present were Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh and Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud.
On Monday, Anwar announced that RON95 petrol would be priced at RM1.99 per litre, down from RM2.05, starting Sept 30 for all Malaysians regardless of income level.
Police and military personnel will enjoy the new price from tomorrow, followed by Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) recipients on Sunday, before the nationwide rollout.
The initiative will benefit about 18 million car and motorcycle users.
Anwar said the BUDI95 initiative is expected to generate savings of between RM2 billion and RM3 billion, which will be channelled back to the public through various assistance measures.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the 2026 budget, to be tabled on Oct 10, will introduce more initiatives to support the public and close development gaps.
