Situation improves in areas hit by landslide, floods in Sabah

The state disaster management committee says all victims in Beaufort and Sipitang have been allowed to return home.

KUALA LUMPUR:
The situation in landslide and flood-affected areas in Sabah is improving with all the victims in Beaufort and Sipitang allowed to return home this morning, while conditions in Penampang, Papar and Membakut remain affected.

The Sabah state disaster management committee said the number of evacuees at temporary relief centres dropped to 1,476 from  2,256 yesterday evening.

Thirteen relief centres remain open – six in Membakut housing 738 flood victims, six in Penampang with 493, and one in Papar sheltering 245.

“There are 53 villages still affected as of this morning, compared with 120 yesterday evening, with 24 in Penampang, 20 in Papar and nine in Membakut,” the committee said in a statement today.

In Sarawak, the state disaster management committee reported that 13 people from three families remain at the Dewan Suarah Marudi relief centre as of 9am.

According to the irrigation and drainage department’s public info banjir portal, the river levels at the Long Teru and Marudi stations in Miri, as well as Lubok Piasau II in Limbang, have receded slightly due to fine weather but remain above the danger mark.
