PETALING JAYA:
Two men were charged in the Sibu magistrates’ court in Sarawak today with the attempted murder of another man last month.

Kho Kwong Teck, 33, was charged with attempting to murder Lau Ang Ho by discharging a firearm at him at the Jalan Penyangkai Majau-Kanowit junction at Jalan Majau in Kanowit at about 5.20pm on Aug 24.

He was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine, and up to 20 years’ jail if injury is caused, upon conviction.

Wong Sing Dieng, 51, was charged with abetting Kho in committing the offence at the same time and place. He faces a similar charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 109 for abetment.

Separately, Wong was also charged with self-administering dangerous drugs, namely amphetamine and methamphetamine, at the Sungai Merah police station on Jalan Wawasan, Sibu at about 11am on June 2.

The charge, framed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39C(2) of the same Act, provides for seven to 13 years’ jail and three to six strokes of the rotan, if convicted.

No pleas were recorded from the accused as attempted murder falls within the jurisdiction of the sessions court and the High Court.

Magistrate Oon Kork Chern, who presided over the cases, fixed Sept 23 for further mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Nuralisa Natasha Nazrulzam appeared for the prosecution, while both accused were unrepresented.
