PETALING JAYA:
Kemaman police have been instructed to increase surveillance at all Petronas facilities following recent threats made against a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Bintulu, Sarawak.

Terengganu police chief Khairi Khairuddin said while police have not received any reports of threats involving individuals or Petronas facilities in the state, he had instructed the Kemaman police chief to tighten security at Petronas’s facilities in Kemaman.

In a New Straits Times report, Khairi said there are six oil refining facilities in Kemaman, apart from other Petronas assets such as petrol stations.

He said police would also focus on other facilities that could potentially disrupt public order if targeted.

Khairi said the directive followed instructions from Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail for all state contingents to remain on high alert after threatening text messages sent to a Petronas officer prompted the National Security Council (MKN) to order tighter security at all LNG facilities in Bintulu.

Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof had said the text messages were sent from a phone number registered in Indonesia. He said the sender initially sent a “specific request” to the Petronas officer, who ignored the SMS.

“Because there was no response, he threatened to burn our LNG facilities, but who knows which one,” said Fadillah on Tuesday.

Khalid today said police were awaiting a response from their Indonesian counterparts to help trace the sender of the text messages.

He said contact had already been made with the Indonesian police (Polri) as part of the ongoing investigation.
