An official launch date has not been confirmed. Provincial officials had previously expected the service to begin in July or early August.
The ferry service would support exports of Aceh’s key commodities, including gayo arabica coffee, tuna, patchouli oil, cloves and betel nuts.
Taufik Rahmat Nasution, an official of the state-owned ferry company, said the company is upgrading facilities and coordinating operations to support the new route.
He said the existing jetty can accommodate vessels of up to 3,000 gross tonnage, with water depths ranging from 9m to 13m.
