BUKIT MERTAJAM:
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has adopted a seemingly reconciliatory tone after he was charged over a Facebook post on a flag gaffe, declaring that the country belonged to all Malaysians.

The firebrand politician said Malaysia did not belong to him, the Malays or the Chinese.

“This is our country together, as one Malaysian people,” he told reporters outside the magistrates’ court here.

The Merlimau assemblyman also said he would not be cowed by the court charge, which he claimed was meant to silence him.

“So to those who wish to frighten me with these charges, don’t dream of it. I will not be afraid.”

Earlier today, Akmal was charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for allegedly posting a video on his Facebook account on Aug 11 that could cause public alarm.

In the video, the Melaka state executive councillor was said to have given the Attorney-General’s Chambers two days to charge a man who had allegedly flown the Jalur Gemilang upside down.

If no action was taken, Akmal said he would “teach the apek” how to hang the flag correctly.

Akmal pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He went on to thank his legal team and the Umno leadership for their support.

“This is not about race or politics. It’s about the dignity of our flag. I take full responsibility, and I will face the trial without fear,” he said.

Separately, his lawyer, Aizat Azam said the charge was weak and that he was confident Akmal had not committed any offence.

“Justice will prevail, God-willing.”
