Elderly man who mistakenly shot woman fined RM6,000

Mangkok Mawa, 89, was hunting behind his home in Serian when he mistook the victim for a squirrel and fatally shot her.

The Serian magistrates’ court slapped 89-year-old Mangkok Mawa with a RM4,000 fine for culpable homicide and RM2,000 for possession of an unlicensed shotgun.

The Serian magistrates’ court has imposed a RM6,000 fine on an elderly man who fatally shot a woman whom he mistook for a squirrel while hunting last month.

Mangkok Mawa, 89, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Corina Dina, 52, without intent and also for possession of an unlicensed shotgun used in the incident.

For the charge of culpable homicide under Section 304A of the Penal Code, he was slapped with a RM4,000 fine or five months’ imprisonment in default.

Section 304A provides for up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

For possession of the shotgun, Mangkok was charged under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act and fined RM2,000, or three months in prison if he failed to pay the fine.

He committed the offences at a village in Tebakang, Serian, at around 10am, on July 23. The shotgun belonged to his son.

Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng prosecuted while Mangkok was unrepresented.
