Journos nabbed in MACC smuggling probe are armed forces retirees

The two journalists remanded by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday for alleged involvement in a smuggling syndicate in the south are believed to have previously served in the armed forces.

Berita Harian quoted a source as saying they had retired from the armed forces and were now employed as journalists for an online media agency.

“Their roles (in the criminal enterprise) have not been determined, as MACC’s investigation is ongoing,” said the source.

The journalists are among 10 people arrested two days ago, including five senior armed forces officers, for alleged involvement in the syndicate.

The other three are a company manager, an administrative assistant at the Malaysian Medical Association, and an Indonesian woman.

The smuggled goods reportedly included drugs, cigarettes and other contraband from neighbouring countries, with an estimated monthly value of RM5 million.

More than RM63,000 in cash, drugs, weighing equipment, liquor and imitation firearms were also seized from the raided premises.

Four of the men have been remanded for seven days until Aug 20, while two men and one woman have been remanded for five days until Aug 18. Two other men and the Indonesian woman were remanded for three days until today.
