Blazing Myvi causes 10km traffic jam on Penang Bridge

A car fire on the Penang Bridge this morning caused a 10km traffic jam, leaving motorists stranded for nearly an hour during peak traffic.

The incident occurred at 7.04am at Km6.8 of the bridge heading towards George Town when a Perodua Myvi caught fire, prompting the temporary closure of the affected lane for 30 minutes to allow firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

Jalan Perak fire and rescue station operations commander Azman Ibrahim said the fire was put out in under 10 minutes, reported Berita Harian.

“The vehicle was about 90% damaged, but no injuries were reported.

“The driver, a 46-year-old woman, managed to escape safely after being alerted by a motorcyclist who noticed flames at the front of her car,” he said.

The operation ended at 7.47am.
