PETALING JAYA:
A woman was arrested at KLIA Terminal 1 last night for allegedly trying to smuggle nine exotic animals to Hyderabad, India.

The 36-year-old was arrested after Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) officers conducted a routine baggage check and found nine wild animals in the woman’s checked luggage.

In a statement, AKPS said the four siamangs, four sugar gliders and one macaque found in the luggage were estimated to be worth RM127,000.

“All of these animals are protected species. They are believed to be smuggled for the illegal exotic animal trade,” said AKPS.

AKPS said the woman was taken to the KLIA police station for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008.
