In a written parliamentary reply, law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said this is aimed at achieving a preliminary consensus on the proposal, since it would involve amending the Federal Constitution.
Azalina said the findings of a study on the proposal had been presented to the Cabinet in March, where it was agreed that discussions would be held with all political parties, including those in East Malaysia.
“The Cabinet took note that this proposal involves amending the constitution and touches on the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (regarding the appointment of a prime minister).
“Therefore, it requires holistic and thorough studies, including obtaining the views and agreement of all stakeholders, such as state governments and political parties at the federal and state levels,” she said.
Earlier this year, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed support for DAP’s call to amend the Federal Constitution to limit the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years or two terms.
However, he said it was important to secure the support of all parties.
