JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said the pilot programme was specifically for those holding a public service vehicle (PSV) and/or goods driving license (GDL) but needed to undergo retraining before their licences could be considered for reinstatement.
He said the objective of the programme was to improve road safety and enhance the professionalism of drivers.
“Right now, drivers who have their PSV and GDL licences reinstated can immediately hit the road and they don’t get any follow-up training.
“We believe additional and refresher training is necessary to remind them of the rules, as some may have forgotten them,” he told a press conference after a stakeholder engagement session with lorry, express bus, and tourism bus operators.
According to Aedy, the course syllabus and other implementation details were being finalised with the transport ministry.
He said for now, the course would only apply to PSV and GDL licence holders, but that it might later be extended to those under other driving licence categories.
“We may introduce a refresher course for heavy vehicle drivers,” he added.
Separately, Aedy said the demerit points system (Kejara) was in the final stages of a revamp and that details would be announced once official approval was obtained.
