In a Facebook post, Bersatu Supreme Council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the appointment was made during a recent meeting of the party’s Supreme Council.
He also attached a statement by Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali dated July 15 that was issued after the meeting but did not mention Hamzah’s appointment.
When contacted, Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz confirmed Hamzah’s appointment.
According to Wan Saiful, the meeting saw several key decisions made, including those related to the party’s upcoming annual general assembly and a dinner to mark Bersatu’s ninth anniversary.
“Most importantly, we discussed efforts to build cooperation with all non-government political parties and our preparations for the Sabah state election,” he added.
