GRS deputy secretary-general Armizan Mohd Ali said this would be one of the coalition’s key pledges in its election manifesto, “Sabah United”, Sinar Harian reported.
“The state Cabinet made this commitment when it met in December 2023, to limit the term of a chief minister to only two consecutive terms.
“However, because we do not currently have a two-thirds majority (in the state assembly), we decided that the amendment to the state constitution would only be tabled after we obtain a new mandate from Sabahans,” he said.
Armizan said GRS was in the midst of drafting the bill, adding that it would be one of the first to be tabled in the state assembly should the coalition win the state polls, which must be held by January 2026.
Last year, Armizan said the idea of limiting the chief minister’s tenure was mooted by Sabah chief minister and GRS chairman Hajiji Noor.
He also said that “outstanding” and “effective” chief ministers who complete two terms could return to the post if their parties were duly elected, provided that the leaders go through a “cooling-off period”.
He did not specify the duration of this period.
