SUNGAI PETANI:
Police have shot dead a man believed to be involved in a series of armed robberies, just hours after two other criminal suspects were killed in a shootout in Jitra.

The 34-year-old man was killed during a similar shootout with police at Bandar Puteri Jaya at 7.50pm yesterday, the Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) acting director Fadil Marsus said.

“This was a special operation led by Bukit Aman CID in collaboration with several state contingents and all branches of the police,” Fadil told reporters at the scene.

“The man was believed to be part of a gang involved in a series of armed robberies across several states. Attempts were made to arrest him, but he resisted and a shootout ensued, leading to his death.”

He said police believed the man, who had a criminal record for more than 30 prior offences, was a key member of a criminal group, comprising at least a dozen members.

Yesterday morning, two other suspected criminals from the same gang were killed by police in a shootout near the North-South Expressway (PLUS) exit near Bandar Darul Aman in Jitra.

The gang had been responsible for a string of armed robberies and drug trafficking cases, with losses estimated at nearly RM6 million, dating back to 2022.

“Our investigations indicate that this suspect was involved in three recent armed robberies in Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Perak,” Fadil said.

Meanwhile, the third suspect’s wife has been remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation.

Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said the woman, in her 20s, was arrested at their rented home located nearby.

“A search was conducted at the premises, and we seized a pistol. The remand order is effective from today until July 12,” he told reporters at the Kuala Muda district police headquarters.
