Sarawak to table bill on state assembly composition at special sitting

Speaker Asfia Awang Nassar says the bill is to increase the number of elected assemblymen but not the number of Sarawakian MPs.

PETALING JAYA:
A bill to increase the number of elected members in the Sarawak state legislative assembly will be tabled during next Monday’s special sitting, says speaker Asfia Awang Nassar.

Asfia said the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025 will be tabled by state tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Dayak Daily reported.

“The first, second and third readings of the bill will be done on the same day,” he was quoted as saying at a press conference at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu headquarters today.

There had been speculation that the special sitting would see the tabling of a bill to increase the number of Sarawak’s share of parliamentary seats to 46, and the number of state seats from the current 82 to 99.

There are 31 Sarawakian MPs currently.

Asfia clarified that the proposed bill concerns only an increase in the number of state assembly members, and does not involve any redrawing of constituency boundaries, which falls under the Election Commission’s jurisdiction.

“Let me draw a clear line of demarcation between the composition of elected members in the state assembly and the delineation of constituencies on the ground,” he said.

“Delineation is not done by the state assembly, it is left to EC.”

He said the bill only requires a simple majority to pass, not two-thirds, as provided for under Article 41(3)(a) of the Sarawak Constitution.

The last redelineation exercise in Sarawak was conducted in 2015, before the 2016 state election, and led to 11 seats being added to the state assembly.
