PETALING JAYA:
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) personnel who fail to meet a body mass index (BMI) requirement of 27 or lower will not be eligible for promotion starting January next year.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said this was aimed at tackling obesity among the commission’s officers and staff.

“We are giving all MACC personnel six months to reach their ideal body weight,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.

Azam said the police had already enforced a BMI cap of 26 for its personnel.

“We’re implementing this at MACC as well, because MACC is an important government agency,” he said.

Azam said personnel at all MACC divisions would now be required to undergo health screenings every three months at government hospitals.

“Civil servants who are overweight tend to suffer from various illnesses. Obesity in the public service must be addressed and should not be tolerated.

“When MACC officers and staff maintain a healthy weight and professional appearance, it improves how they carry out their duties and serve the public,” he said.
