Brickfields police chief Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said the man’s identity had yet to be ascertained.
“An investigation is ongoing and efforts are under way to remove the body from the site,” he told FMT.
In a statement, the Kuala Lumpur fire and rescue department said it received an emergency call for assistance to retrieve the body at about 5pm.
The Pantai fire and rescue station’s senior fire superintendent, Wan Shahrir Azizi Wan Said, said his team discovered the body in the water-filled lift shaft of a building under construction on Lorong Maarof.
“We are waiting for a pathology team from University Malaya Medical Centre to collect a DNA sample from the deceased. Police are present at the scene,” he said.
