PETALING JAYA:
A school van driver was charged with negligence at the Batu Pahat magistrates’ court today for allegedly leaving a five-year-old boy in his vehicle, resulting in the child’s death.

Yau Chee Weng, 57, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before judge Khalid Ab Karim, Berita Harian reported.

Yau was accused of committing the offence in front of a kindergarten in Jalan Indah 10/14, Taman Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, between 8am and 12.05pm on April 30.

The charge was framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum penalty of RM50,000, up to 20 years’ jail, or both upon conviction.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Sharifah Natasha Syed Ahmad while Yau was represented by defence lawyer Goh Toh Jen.

The court granted Yau bail of RM7,000 with one surety and ordered him to surrender his passport and refrain from disturbing witnesses until the proceedings conclude.

Case management is set for June 16.
