Nurul Izzah said she respected the views of the grassroots and leaders who had urged her to vie for the second-highest post in the party, which is currently held by Rafizi Ramli.
“PKR is at a crucial juncture. Therefore, every decision must consider not only the need to unite the party and strengthen the bonds among fellow comrades, but also to bring meaningful change to ensure that the party remains relevant.
“I will make the best decision possible to balance between consensus, friendship, change, and meaningful reforms for all members.
“My final decision will not be for the sake of any individual, but to build PKR’s future together,” she said in a Facebook post.
Numerous top and divisional leaders have stated their support for Nurul Izzah to contest the deputy president’s post, which Rafizi won in 2022 by defeating former PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
They include vice-president Amirudin Shari, Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek, youth wing chief Adam Adli, and Shamsul Iskandar Akin, the senior political secretary to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
A party source had said that more PKR leaders were expected to declare their support for Nurul Izzah.
Nurul Izzah was appointed as a PKR vice-president in 2022 after opting not to contest the central leadership elections that year.
She went on to lose her Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election to PAS’s Fawwaz Jan, who won with a comfortable majority of 5,272 votes to defeat PKR’s “Puteri Reformasi”.
