PETALING JAYA:
Perak PKR has called for party vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar to contest the deputy presidency in the upcoming elections for the central leadership council.

Perak PKR information chief Azam Afandi said Nurul Izzah, the daughter of party president Anwar Ibrahim, was no stranger to the party’s struggles and had proven her grit and principles through the years.

He said the PKR vice-president also had the vision and values that the party needed to face future challenges, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“This is not a question of personality or heritage. It is about PKR’s future as a party that is relevant and trusted by the people.

“In our increasingly challenging political environment, we need leaders who can become a bridge between the founders of the Reformasi movement and the new generation who will inherit this struggle,” he said.

Nurul Izzah previously said she would contest the PKR vice-presidency, a post to which she was appointed after sitting out the 2022 party polls.

A divisional leader earlier urged PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli not to defend his post and to instead make way for Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to take over the position.

Saifuddin has yet to decide whether to contest the central leadership elections while Rafizi previously said he would be defending the deputy presidency.
